Palma, Mallorca: Shops around Plaza del Mercat face no building work over Christmas as the city pushes the start of the square’s revamp back to February 2027. Palma City Council said on 29 October 2026 that it had agreed the delay with traders and representatives of other affected groups. Work on the square and Unió street will begin after the Christmas season and the Sant Sebastià festivities.

The council says the later start will help businesses through an important trading period and limit disruption. It has also told local residents about the revised timetable and the planned work.

What will change around the square

The project costs more than €4.4 million, including €3.1 million from the Sustainable Tourism Tax. It covers almost 11,600 square metres across Plaza del Mercat, Unió street, Plaza Weyler and the stretch of Riera street between the square and La Rambla.

At Plaza del Mercat, the inner traffic lane around the square will go, making more room for pedestrians on a continuous surface. The plans also include new paving and LED street lighting. On Unió street, pavements will widen and the road will narrow, with a continuous surface along the section facing the square. Bus and taxi stops, along with loading areas, will be rearranged.

The work also includes new street furniture and repairs to drainage infrastructure. Rainwater and wastewater pipes will be separated, damaged collectors replaced and the drinking-water network worked on. Spaces for people with reduced mobility, loading areas, accessible EMT bus stops and taxi ranks will remain.
