Palma City Council gave the plan final approval on Wednesday 28 October after considering objections from affected owners. The process began in February. The council says it must pay or set aside compensation before it can recover the premises.

The plans also aim to make the route between Plaza Mayor and the Rambla easier to use by addressing the change in level. A centre about the city's history is planned for the square.

Help for Palma's landmark shops

At the same meeting, the council approved grants of up to 150,000 euros for businesses in its catalogue of emblematic shops. The money can cover running costs incurred in 2026, including rent, staff, electricity, advertising and cleaning.

Christmas lights move to Parc de la Mar

The council also awarded Deejaygrup a contract worth nearly 374,000 euros to stage the 2026 Christmas lights show. It is due to take place for the first time at Parc de la Mar on Saturday 21 November, ending with a countdown and the switch-on.
