Balearic leader joins King at Poblet after 15 years
After 15 years without a meeting, the board of trustees at Poblet monastery meets again on Thursday. Balearic president Marga Prohens joins King Felipe VI, who chairs the meeting in Vimbodí i Poblet, Tarragona province. Leaders from Catalonia, the Valencian Community and Aragón also attend to discuss protecting the monastery and making its history better known.
The board last met in 2011. Its return coincides with the 35th anniversary of Poblet’s designation as a Unesco World Heritage site.
A longer-term plan for Poblet
Prohens calls the meeting a turning point. She wants stronger support from the institutions involved and more stability in the work to preserve Poblet. Culture minister Ernest Urtasun calls for closer cooperation and wants the monastery to be more open to society.
Catalan president Salvador Illa suggests using the board as a place where the four regions can share projects. Aragón’s president, Jorge Azcón, proposes annual meetings that move between the regions, starting in Aragón.
Abbot calls for a protection law
Abbot Rafael Barrué wants a law that brings together the public bodies responsible for Poblet and secures lasting support and resources. He says the monastery needs every board member’s help to continue its work for society.
