Spain's housing decrees gain four Podemos votes

Four votes for Spain’s two housing decrees are now lined up in Madrid: Podemos says its MPs will back both measures in Congress on Friday. Party leader Ione Belarra announced the decision on Thursday after the Confederación de Sindicatos de Inquilinos, a tenants’ union confederation, asked for its support. The vote remains uncertain, though: PNV and Junts have not said how they will vote.

Belarra told Spanish broadcaster TVE that the measures approved by Spain’s Council of Ministers do not go far enough, calling them “crumbs”. Podemos will back them anyway, she said, rather than give the government an “excuse” to “keep doing nothing”.

Podemos has criticised the government for putting indefinite rental contracts in a separate decree from its other housing measures. The party had said it would follow the tenants’ group’s lead. Its four votes make the government’s path easier, but the outcome of Friday’s vote still depends on PNV and Junts.
