Mallorca: Podemos hopeful targets homes and tourism
Housing pressure and tourism growth are at the heart of Ana Rosa Abejón’s bid to lead Podemos into the Balearic Parliament elections. The sign-language interpreter announced in Palma on Wednesday that she is standing in the party’s primary for the regional vote in May 2026. She says more and more families cannot find a home, make it to the end of the month or build a life in the islands.
Abejón wants public action against property speculation, a larger stock of public housing and protection for working families. Housing, she argues, cannot remain a business for a small number of people.
She links the housing shortage to tourism overcrowding and wants limits on further tourism growth, moving towards a reduction in the sector. Thousands of people work in tourism but still cannot afford to live in the Balearic Islands, she said.
Her platform also calls for stronger public services and care policies. Families should not have to manage care for children, older people and those needing support alone, she says, if there is to be a real right to housing and equality.
Abejón has been a Podemos member since the party’s early years and is now its Balearic Islands secretary for Feminisms and LGTBI+. Podemos said she has spent much of her professional life defending the rights of deaf and deafblind people and tackling communication barriers.
