Podemos’s 10-region election offer hits an IU wall

Ten regions, no side deal: United Left (IU) will not negotiate Podemos’s election offer without its Frente Amplio partners. IU leader Antonio Maíllo set out that position in Madrid, Spain, on Thursday, 15 October, after Podemos proposed joint election deals in ten autonomous communities.

The offer went to IU alone. It left out the Madrid and Barcelona constituencies, where Podemos would continue to compete with Frente Amplio. Speaking to Spanish broadcaster TVE, Maíllo said he would welcome Podemos into a joint election alliance — but talks must be with Frente Amplio as a whole.

Maíllo also criticised the timing: Podemos made its approach about a day and a half before the legal deadline to register coalitions. Frente Amplio, he said, wants an alliance that works across Spain, not separate deals for individual regional elections.
