Palma housing squeeze: Muñoz seeks Podemos mayoral run

Palma councillor Lucía Muñoz is seeking to lead Podemos’ bid for the city’s mayoralty, putting housing and tourist overcrowding at the heart of her campaign. She announced her decision in a video posted on social media on 8 September 2026. Muñoz said she wants to build the political backing needed to curb tourist pressure and secure housing as a right.

The councillor said she had put forward many measures on housing and tourist overcrowding in recent years, but that they had too often been voted down. Standing in the party primary is, she said, a step towards turning those ideas into action rather than merely proposing them.

Muñoz wants Palma to stop becoming a “theme park” and instead serve the people who live there. Her platform says homes should not be a luxury, young people should have prospects and working families should be able to make ends meet.

She argues that the city needs different priorities, with the needs of people who live and work in Palma put ahead of tourist pressure and speculation in housing. The video ends with a call to organise a social and political majority around that plan for the city.
