Podemos attacks PSOE Senate deal despite Balearic alliance

A Balearic election alliance that includes Mallorca puts Podemos on the same side as parties it is attacking nationally: Frente Amplio parties share a slate with Podemos and Ara Més, even as Frente Amplio agrees joint Senate candidate lists with the Socialists (PSOE).

Podemos leader Ione Belarra attacked the Senate deal at a press conference in Spain’s parliament in Madrid on Tuesday, 27 October. She called it a new form of two-party politics, using the phrase “bipartidismo 2.0”.

Belarra said Podemos’s alliance with the Catalan party ERC offers a different choice for the left. She argued that Podemos candidate Irene Montero and ERC lead candidate Gabriel Rufián could stand apart from both PP and Vox, and PSOE and Frente Amplio. She accused United Left (IU) in particular of choosing a deal with PSOE over agreements with Podemos.

The Balearic alliance is not the only exception to that national divide. Frente Amplio parties also appear on slates alongside Podemos and Nueva Canarias in the Canary Islands, and Compromís in the Valencia region. Belarra said Podemos would explain its objections to the Senate deal during the election campaign.
