Menorca awards 19 police merit crosses, four for 30 years
On Menorca, 19 police merit crosses go to recipients on Tuesday, 29 September: four honour officers with 30 years of service. The Balearic government presents the awards at a ceremony led by vice-president Antònia Maria Estarellas. Fifteen crosses carry a green emblem; the four long-service crosses carry a white one.
The white crosses go to Josep Pieres of Ciutadella, Antonio Pons of Es Castell, Josep Lluís Martí of Ferreries and Miguel Ramon Olivé of Sant Lluís. Green crosses go to local police officers from Ciutadella, Alaior, Maó and Es Migjorn Gran. Two people outside the local police also receive them: defence colonel Alberto Hernando and Rafel Covas of the Balearic Public Security Institute.
Estarellas credits local police work with helping to make the Balearic Islands safer. She says more than 50 new officers will have joined police on Menorca’s streets by the end of the parliamentary term, alongside around 700 across the islands.
The ceremony also recognises people outside the local police, including a national police inspector, a municipal works chief and a Civil Protection volunteer chief. Five municipalities and 13 officers receive quality seals for road-safety education or school police-support programmes.
