Rust at Palma pool prompts urgent roof safety call
On Mallorca, rust on the roof of the municipal pool in Son Ferriol, Palma, prompts a union call for an urgent inspection on 30 October. SOM Sindicalistes says parts of the roof appear damaged. Palma City Council says its first checks have found no structural risk.
Union wants the whole roof checked
The union reports stains, rust deposits and visible damage to the roof panels. It says areas around the fittings also appear damaged or detached. People of different ages use the pool daily, and staff work there.
SOM Sindicalistes wants technicians to inspect the entire roof, establish how far the damage extends and check whether any parts could fall. It says the humidity and condensation in the heated pool make that assessment especially important. If the inspection finds a risk, the union wants affected areas cordoned off or temporarily closed.
City commissions report
Palma City Council says the Institut Municipal d'Esports (IME), its municipal sports institute, has commissioned a technical report. The council says it has monitored the roof for some time and has already improved and protected one section, including by fitting a metal gutter. Further checks will determine what repairs are still needed.
The union wants the report to set out the defects, repairs and deadlines, with the findings shared with workers’ representatives. It is also calling for damaged parts to be repaired and a preventive maintenance plan put in place.
