Pope remembers 20 murdered Ibiza and Formentera priests
Ibiza and Formentera: Pope Leo XIV remembers 20 priests murdered during the Civil War at his Wednesday audience in St Peter’s Square on 21 October. Juan Torres Torres and 19 fellow priests were beatified on Saturday at the Cathedral of Eivissa, Ibiza.
The Bishopric of the Pityusic Islands said the Pope told pilgrims the priests had been killed because of their faith during religious persecution in the last century. Their example, he said, encourages people to devote their lives to loving God and others.
At the beatification Mass, Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, representing the Pope, said a martyr is a witness. A martyr does not seek death, he said, but refuses to deny Christ even when remaining faithful puts their life at risk. The strength of that witness lies not in the violence suffered, but in the love to which the martyr stays true.
