Porreres calls for safer ring roads

Porreres, Mallorca, could see wider pavements, lower kerbs and more trees along its ring roads under a motion due at the next town hall plenary. MÉS per Porreres is also seeking better lighting, bins and safer crossings after highlighting stretches that it says are difficult for wheelchair users and families with pushchairs. The roads have long taken traffic away from the town centre, but MÉS says they are now also used for walks, sport and journeys between different parts of Porreres. Spokesman Sebastià Lliteres said they should not be treated as roads alone and must be safe and accessible.

Crossings and narrow pavements

The party says some junctions between the ring roads and streets in the town centre are unsafe. It also says pedestrian crossings and other points lack enough road markings and signs.

Its motion calls for pavements to be widened and adapted where space permits, kerbs to be lowered at crossings and obstacles removed. It also seeks stronger signage, more lighting, extra bins and tree planting to create new shaded areas.

Cycle lane and unfinished eastern route

MÉS per Porreres wants the town to examine a safe, accessible cycle lane along the ring roads where the available space allows it. It says accessibility, road safety, sustainable transport, lighting, trees and urban services should be addressed through one overall plan rather than separate schemes.

The motion also asks the Consell de Mallorca to provide financial and technical support on sections under its responsibility. The party again raised the eastern ring road, planned to link the ses Forques ring road with the Porrera ring road and complete Porreres' bypass perimeter after more than 25 years of waiting.
