Mallorca could face severe storms from Friday night

Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, could face locally severe thunderstorms from late Friday. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) raised the possibility on Wednesday, but says it cannot yet pin down where the heaviest rain will fall.

The unsettled weather begins on the Spanish mainland. A front moves across the country from west to east on Thursday, followed by cold air higher in the atmosphere and moisture from the Mediterranean. A developing area of low pressure between Spain’s south-east coast and the Balearics will bring more damp air towards the region.

The heaviest rain is expected in eastern mainland Spain. Coastal and nearby areas could receive more than 150 litres per square metre in less than six hours. Aemet warns that downpours could cause sudden local flooding in low-lying areas, streams and dry riverbeds.

Rain is expected across much of the mainland over the weekend. An isolated area of low pressure high in the atmosphere, known in Spain as a dana, could keep conditions unsettled there and in the Balearics until at least Monday morning, though with less intensity. Aemet says the timing, location and strength of the worst rain remain uncertain and recommends following its forecast updates and warnings.
