Mallorca postal protest: Workers rally after 200 job losses

Postal workers in Palma, Mallorca, will protest outside Correos’ main office on Thursday after 200 jobs were lost across the Balearics in two years. The Central Sindical Independiente y de Funcionarios (CSIF) union wants shorter working hours, more staff and an end to insecure contracts. It says Correos has not answered the demands raised at an earlier Palma protest on 3 September.

Job losses and rising absences

CSIF says the loss of 200 posts has piled pressure on the remaining workforce. Workplace accidents have risen by 33% and sick leave by 60%, it says.

The union also points to part-time contracts, with workers on them earning less than €800.

Agreement promises and Madrid action

Correos signed a framework agreement in December 2024 that included strengthening the workforce, introducing a 35-hour week, turning part-time roles into full-time jobs and starting a plan to bring in younger staff, according to CSIF.

The union says the state-owned postal service has failed to honour that agreement. If there is still no response, CSIF plans to step up its campaign with a large demonstration in Madrid on Wednesday 30 September, demanding an “immediate change” at Correos.
