Mallorca postal vote row: PP backs it, Vox warns

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca’s postal vote divide: the Balearic People’s Party (PP) urges people on the Spanish mainland to request a ballot for the next general election, while Vox tells voters to avoid voting by post. At a press conference in Palma, Mallorca, on 7 October, PP spokesman in the Balearic Parliament Sebastià Sagreras says he does not question the system’s reliability. Vox spokeswoman Manuela Cañadas says she fears Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez could cheat in the election.

Why the parties disagree

Sagreras says those who can vote in person should do so, but those on the mainland should apply for a postal vote. He was responding to a question about Madrid regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso, who had urged people not to vote by post.

Socialist spokesman Iago Negueruela criticises the doubts cast on postal voting and says the system is secure. Sagreras, meanwhile, urges people to turn out. Among his reasons, he cites the failure to renew the Balearic Islands’ special tax regime, a funding system he says works against the islands, and Aena’s management of their airports.

PP seeks longer support for family carers

The PP has also filed a proposal in the Balearic Parliament concerning CUME, a benefit for families caring for children with cancer or another serious illness. It wants Spain’s government to allow support beyond the age of 26 in exceptional cases: where a person has a disability of at least 65 per cent or grade III severe dependency, and still needs proven direct, continuous care.

Sagreras says each case should be assessed rather than extended automatically. The proposal also calls for common criteria so families are treated consistently, recognition of care during hospitalisation at home, shared caring responsibilities and enough resources to make the support effective.
