Mallorca power cable: closed coal units prompt route rethink

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

In Alcúdia, Mallorca, a rejected power cable route is back in dispute: a local group wants it reviewed after two coal units closed. On 29 October 2026, the Association for a New Alcúdia Cable Agreement (Anaca) called on Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge or the Balearic government to commission an independent review. The group wants another look at routes for Penbal2, the power link between the mainland and the Balearic Islands.

Anaca says the closure of coal units 3 and 4 at Es Murterar power station removes the reason for ruling out a route through the station’s cooling pipes. It says the environmental impact study linked those pipes only to the two units.

The group also points to the Balearic government’s plans to keep Es Murterar strategically important, including for links between Mallorca, Menorca and the mainland. Anaca says that sits uneasily with the earlier decision to rule out the cable route through the station. It wants an independent review to test the alternatives.
