Spain housing plan: PP pledges one million homes
The Partido Popular says it will free up building land for one million homes if it takes power. Borja Sémper, the party’s spokesman, made the pledge in Madrid on Monday, 14 September. He said the measure would go to the first Cabinet meeting of a PP government.
Tax cuts and a 24-hour eviction plan
The party also says it would cut taxes on buying a home, help young people with public guarantees for their deposit and repeal the current housing law.
Sémper said the PP would introduce a law targeting people known as okupas, allowing evictions within 24 hours. He claimed this would restore legal certainty and bring back homes that owners had taken off the market because of those concerns.
PP attacks Casa 47 portal
Sémper also attacked Casa 47, the government housing portal, calling it an example of empty promises. He said Pedro Sánchez’s government had successively promised 15,000, 20,000 and 140,000 homes, but ended with a website showing 800.
He claimed the portal does not work and said its interactive map was removed days after Sumar complained that it did not show Western Sahara as independent from Morocco. Sémper also said Casa 47 leaves out reference prices in areas officially classed as under housing pressure and, in some municipalities, advertises homes above market prices.
With inflation above 4% due to be confirmed on Tuesday, Sémper said middle-income households could no longer absorb rising prices without matching wage growth. Housing costs, he said, have risen by more than 12% over the past year and a half.
