Spain’s PP tells Sánchez to call an election on Monday
Spain’s People’s Party wants Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to call a general election on Monday: its secretary-general, Miguel Tellado, makes the demand in a statement sent to the media on Sunday, 4 October. He says his party is ready to contest the vote and warns that waiting longer will make things worse for Sánchez.
Tellado says a November election would be better than one in December, March or July, though he proposes no date for the vote itself. He also ties his demand to housing, claiming the People’s Party would build the million homes he says Spain needs.
Tellado accuses Sánchez of ordering José Félix Tezanos, head of Spain’s Centre for Sociological Research, to rush through opinion polls before deciding whether to bring the election forward. His statement provides no evidence for that claim.
