Spain’s 29 November general election: the People’s Party (PP) and Vox are discussing a Senate pact to stop the Socialist Party (PSOE) taking control. In Madrid, Spain, on Wednesday, 21 October, PP Senate spokeswoman Alicia García says she hopes the two parties reach a deal. The PP currently holds an absolute majority in the chamber.

García says an agreement will take “generosity on both sides”. PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo has confirmed the talks, as the parties look for a way to counter an election deal between the PSOE and other left-wing groups.

Whether the PP and Vox will field joint candidates in any province remains open. In Ciudad Real, Spain, PP Congress candidate Carmen Fúnez gives no details of the talks and says her party must act responsibly and use common sense.

Fúnez also accuses Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government of using social measures to campaign. She points to Tuesday’s decision to extend a benefit for caring for children with cancer or another serious illness beyond age 26, where the person receiving care has a disability of at least 65% or grade III dependency. Fúnez says the government rejected a similar PP proposal weeks earlier over its cost, which she puts at 2.3 million euros for 2027.
