Mallorca: PP and Vox Senate deal goes to the wire
Palma, Mallorca: PP and Vox leave a possible Senate deal open as the deadline for filing candidate lists arrives on Monday, 26 October. Their parliamentary spokeswomen, Marga Durán and Manuela Cañadas, say talks are taking place in Madrid ahead of Spain’s 29 November general election. Neither says whether the parties will run together for Senate seats in the Balearic Islands.
Talks run up against the deadline
Cañadas, speaking for Vox, expects negotiations to continue until the last moment. Durán, the PP spokeswoman, says people should wait until the end of the day and that she has no information about a deal.
An agreement would be the parties’ answer to a joint Senate bid by the PSOE, Frente Amplio and regional left-wing parties. Rosario Sánchez, deputy leader of the Balearic Socialist Party, defended the left’s decision to join forces.
Police give a different account of knife find
Cañadas also complained about protests against Vox leader Santiago Abascal’s appearances in Maó, Palma and Eivissa over the weekend. She claimed police had stopped a man carrying a concealed knife near his Palma rally, held by Mallorca Cathedral.
Police sources gave a different account. Officers found a minor with a small knife at a security checkpoint near the rally. They said he did not intend to enter the event or make any move to use the knife violently. Officers called his father to take care of him.
