Essential goods would carry no VAT under a plan Spain’s opposition People’s Party (PP) is urging the government to adopt. José Vicente Marí, the party’s deputy spokesman in Congress, set out the proposals on 16 October 2026 as Economy, Trade and Business Minister Carlos Cuerpo appeared before Congress’s Permanent Committee. Marí said the measures would tackle inflation he described as out of control.

The PP also wants a refundable tax credit for children, income tax thresholds adjusted for inflation, taxes on electricity generation scrapped and VAT on electricity cut to 10%.

Marí criticised the government’s economic record and backed the approach of PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo. He said it aimed to raise the average wage from 32,000 to 50,000 euros, but gave no timetable.
