Palma prison annexes: demolition waits for residents
In Palma, Mallorca, people still live in the old prison annexes marked for demolition. The buildings will not come down until they have left, city spokeswoman Mercedes Celeste said on Wednesday, 7 October 2026. Palma City Council approved the demolition plan that day and began the process of awarding a contract for the work, budgeted at more than 423,000 euros.
The annexes once housed prison staff. Celeste said the process of moving out the current residents could not begin without a demolition plan. Municipal social services will offer them support and referrals to available services.
The council also approved an urgent plan to demolish the building at 43 Avenida Joan Miró in Palma. That work has a budget of more than 669,000 euros. The building has been officially declared dilapidated; once it is removed, the site is to become a pedestrian route linking Avenida Joan Miró with Plaza Mediterránea.
