Mallorca private healthcare strike looms over pay row

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca and the rest of the Balearic Islands face protests in private healthcare: unions say stalled talks over pay and working conditions could lead to a strike. UGT announced the plans on 3 November 2026. It says employers have blocked negotiations on a new collective agreement for private healthcare staff.

UGT, CCOO, Satse and USAE want higher pay, enough staff and protection for workers’ rights. UGT says the proposed pay rises would not make up for lost purchasing power. It also objects to proposed cuts to employment rights and what it calls unjustified checks on sick leave.

Teresa Sánchez, UGT’s private healthcare lead, says staff face growing workloads while the sector points to strong financial results. The unions want employers to withdraw their proposals and put forward a new offer. Sánchez says protests could intensify and a strike could follow if talks remain stuck. No dates for either have been announced.
