Palma, Mallorca, has a new private university centre: its first students come from Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza, with medicine, nursing, physiotherapy and psychology among the subjects on offer. The Beato Luis Belda University Centre marked the official opening of its first academic year on Tuesday. About half of the first intake live in Palma, and nearly two-thirds are women.

The centre is affiliated with CEU San Pablo University. The Balearic Islands government, the University of the Balearic Islands, educational institutions and health professional associations backed the opening. RCD Mallorca and Juaneda Hospitales, which the centre calls strategic partners, were also represented.

Balearic education minister Antoni Vera said the centre aims to meet strong demand for healthcare professionals on the islands. Its director, Antonia Sampol, said the new study options would give young people more choice without having to leave the Balearics.

At the opening lecture, Carles Recasens, president of the Balearic Islands’ official doctors’ association, sounded a caution for those entering healthcare: dedication must leave room for rest and personal limits.
