Mallorca's Prohens hits left with Palma camping jibe

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca’s regional president Marga Prohens says people who must work each morning cannot camp for days in Plaça d’Espanya in Palma, Mallorca. She makes the jibe on Wednesday, 21 October, during the second day of a general policy debate, directing it at the Socialist Party of the Balearic Islands (PSIB). It is a political dig, not a claim that anyone is camping in the square.

Prohens is hitting back at the left’s description of her conservative party as the party of the powerful. Workers, middle-income earners and self-employed people are turning away from the left, she argues, accusing her opponents of seeking confrontation.

Her attacks do not stop there. Prohens alludes to messages sent to former Balearic president Francina Armengol by Koldo García, a former adviser to ex-minister José Luis Ábalos. She accuses MÉS per Mallorca spokesman Lluís Apesteguia of backing what she calls the “PSOE mafia”. When Socialist and MÉS spokesmen say she sounds angry, Prohens calls their remarks shameful.
