Mallorca housing and tourism: Prohens pressed for answers
In Palma, Mallorca, opposition parties want Balearic president Marga Prohens to answer for her government’s record on housing and tourist overcrowding at Tuesday’s general policy debate in the Balearic Parliament. Spokespeople for the PSIB, Més per Menorca, MÉS per Mallorca and Unidas Podemos raised the issues on Wednesday after a meeting of parliamentary party representatives. All four say they remain the government’s biggest failings as its term nears its end.
Socialist Marc Pons accused Prohens of failing to address the difficulty of finding a home or the pressure from tourism. He also said public services had worsened, particularly healthcare.
Lluís Apesteguia of MÉS per Mallorca said Prohens had raised tourist overcrowding and population growth in the two previous debates. He expects new housing proposals on Tuesday but doubts she will carry them out.
Josep Castells of Més per Menorca said the government’s approach to housing had failed and argued that Prohens could no longer blame the eight years of earlier left-wing governments. Unidas Podemos politician José María García also pointed to housing difficulties and protests against the tourism model. Vox deputy spokesman Sergio Rodríguez declined to predict what Prohens would say or how his party would respond.
