Mallorca groups press Prohens on rentals

Mallorca’s tourist-rental supply should be reduced gradually to return homes to residential use at affordable prices, environmental groups GOB and Terraferida say. They will take that proposal and five others to Balearic Government president Marga Prohens on 22 September. More than 70,000 people marched in Palma on 26 July against touristification, and the groups say they will bring the mandate expressed at that protest to the meeting.

GOB and Terraferida want the institutions to take concrete action over overcrowding, touristification and the loss of quality of life on Mallorca. They say the measures they propose fall within the powers of the Balearic institutions, accusing the government of pointing to a lack of competence while looking the other way.

Homes and land

The groups want a phased cut in tourist rentals, saying this would make housing available again for residential use at affordable prices. They also call for a halt to building on rural land and an end to policies that weaken land protection.

Roads, water and climate

GOB and Terraferida are also demanding a stop to new projects planned under the Roads Plan and a shift towards a more sustainable transport model.

They want water security protected as the island faces limits on the resource. Their final call is for climate security through a strategy to adapt to and mitigate climate change. The groups say the six measures are possible, specific and depend on the political will of Balearic institutions.
