Prohens accused of electioneering in Balearic speech
Marga Prohens’s speech on Balearic policy draws a sharp response: the UGT union says the regional president speaks to her own voters while leaving others out. On 20 October 2026, UGT Baleares calls her address to the general policy debate self-congratulatory and geared towards an election. Its general secretary, Pedro Homar, says both her account of her government’s record and her new pledges cast her supporters as the voice of the islands.
Homar says Prohens leaves out people who do not share her political outlook. Her speech makes no mention of solidarity or ways to share wealth more widely, he says, although neither is at odds with the islands’ character. Many people want to pay taxes, he adds.
Housing is one test of what happens next. Homar says UGT and the CCOO union have called for some revenue from the sustainable tourism tax to go towards homes. If Prohens governs for another term, he hopes she will keep her promise without making it dependent on Vox.
He says small steps towards changing the Balearic Islands’ economy have yet to produce tangible results because they need votes from the far-right party to go ahead.
