Mallorca: Prohens press release pulled after complaint
In Palma, Mallorca, on 26 October, the election board orders the Balearic government to remove a press release about President Marga Prohens’s parliamentary announcements from its website. The order follows a complaint by the Socialist Party of the Balearic Islands (PSIB). The conservative People’s Party (PP) says the government has already taken the release down.
Socialist MP Mercedes Garrido says Prohens made partisan announcements during a general policy debate in the Balearic parliament. The PSIB says the election board found that the announcements breached electoral law.
The PP points to what the board did not do. It rejected the Socialists’ complaint against holding the debate and their request to open sanction proceedings against Prohens. PP deputy spokeswoman Marga Durán says an election period does not prevent parliament from holding such a debate. The press release is gone, but Prohens faces no sanction proceedings over it.
