Mallorca: MPs seek prostitution study every five years
Every five years, a fresh study of prostitution, trafficking and sexual exploitation across the Balearics: that is what MPs meeting in Palma, Mallorca, want the regional government to fund. On 15 October 2026, the Balearic Parliament’s social affairs committee backed a call to give the Balearic Women’s Institute (IbDona) and the University of the Balearic Islands the money and technical support to do it. All parties supported the proposal; independent MP Agustí Buades abstained.
The study would use the same methods and measures as a 2020 study. That would let researchers track changes and assess whether measures against prostitution are working. MPs also want it to examine how social media is used to recruit women and minors for sexual exploitation. Specialist groups supporting women in prostitution would contribute what they have learned from their work.
The committee also wants IbDona to encourage councils in municipalities with more than 50,000 residents to report every five years on trafficking, prostitution and sexual exploitation of children and teenagers in their areas. It has called for a dedicated line in the annual budget to help people who want to leave prostitution.
