Mallorca: Palma shops may close early over protest
On Mallorca, shops near Plaza de España in Palma may close early on Friday if security for a planned protest falls short. The gathering is due to take place during trading hours, with staff and customers inside nearby shops. The Balearic Federation of Retail Business Owners (Afedeco) says early closing would be a precaution, not a decision already made.
The warning follows reports of messages in a Telegram group referring to looting and damage to shops. Afedeco says the group’s administrator supports a peaceful protest and rejects vandalism. It wants the authorities to check the messages and take precautions without assuming protesters will be violent.
Shops around Plaza de España, Calle Oms and nearby shopping streets are particularly concerned about the timing. Afedeco vice-president Pedro Miró says any response to a sign of trouble should come before an incident, not after it.
Afedeco has asked the Spanish Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands and Palma City Council for adequate security measures. It also wants shops to be told which areas may be affected, whether access could be restricted and how to report incidents.
