Mallorca: PSIB wants Costa out as GDP per head stalls

In Palma, Mallorca, Balearic growth is failing to lift gross domestic product (GDP) per head, according to the regional government. On Friday 23 October, the PSIB calls for economy minister Antoni Costa to quit. Its parliamentary spokesman, Iago Negueruela, is responding to a third-quarter economic report Costa presented on Thursday.

Negueruela says the figures expose a failure in the government's economic policies. Growth without more widely shared wealth or greater wellbeing is not enough, he argues. He says Costa should go home.

The concern also came from within the government. Catalina Barceló, its director general for economy and statistics, said the Balearic economy was not turning growth into higher GDP per head. She said that was why the government was pressing for a change to the economic model.
