Mallorca: €1,500 rents fuel row before Balearic debate
In Palma, Mallorca, Rosario Sánchez says rents across the Balearic Islands now average around €1,500 and are forcing people to leave because they cannot afford to stay. At a press conference on Monday, 19 October 2026, the Socialist PSIB’s candidate for the 2027 regional election accuses the Balearic government of refusing to cap rents. Regional president Marga Prohens is due to speak on Tuesday and Wednesday in a debate on the state of the islands.
Housing and tourism under fire
Sánchez says the government enters the debate without answers to problems it faced when its term began in 2023. Housing costs more than it did then, she says, while the islands face overcrowding from tourism. She also points to growing healthcare waiting lists and criticises the government for legalising homes on rural land and weakening coastal protections.
Sánchez says Prohens must account for those decisions in the debate. She also criticises how it was arranged, saying the government filed notice with the Balearic Parliament without first speaking to party representatives.
PSIB backs storm measures
The criticism stops at the government’s response to storm Adam. Iago Negueruela, the PSIB’s spokesman in the Balearic Parliament, welcomes Prohens’s call to political parties on Sunday to brief them on the situation.
He says the PSIB supports the government’s measures to prevent harm to people. The party will also back measures to tackle climate change and the funding they need, he says.
