Mallorca PSIB moves to halt €41 million Tirme payment
Mallorca’s planned 41 million euro extra payment to waste operator Tirme faces a challenge: the PSIB wants the island council to stop processing it. On Thursday, 1 October, the party said it would put a motion to the Consell de Mallorca, the island council, and did not rule out going to court.
Check the costs before paying
PSIB council spokeswoman Catalina Cladera said Tirme should receive no more money until the Sindicatura de Comptes, the public accounts watchdog, examines the finances. She also wants a cost study to establish the right charge for handling Mallorca’s waste.
The party has already lodged objections to the waste tariff. Cladera said the council has three months to reply, and the PSIB wants the payment file published ahead of the next council meeting. Any further legal action will depend on what happens there.
Could rubbish charges fall?
PSIB politician Amanda Fernández also questioned a 103 million euro council contribution to Tirme. She said a report by the council’s internal financial watchdog suggested rubbish charges could be lower in light of the company’s profits.
Fernández said there had been no word on an audit announced a month ago by council president Llorenç Galmés. She also criticised the 50 million euros the Balearic government pays the council for handling waste brought from Eivissa.
The PSIB wants rubbish charges reduced, but says Tirme’s accounts must be examined properly before it can propose a cut.
