Mallorca housing crisis drives PSOE's 2027 campaign

Housing, overcrowding and climate action are at the centre of Mallorca PSOE’s push towards the May 2027 elections. The party launched work on its manifesto at a political council meeting in Lloret de Vistalegre on Saturday, 19 September. Amanda Fernández, the party’s island leader and candidate for president of the Consell de Mallorca, chaired the meeting.

Fernández said the island creates wealth while too many people in work cannot afford rent. She said families were living with insecurity and young people were leaving because remaining on Mallorca had become a privilege.

She also pointed to congestion and the time that thousands of people lose each day travelling to work. Fernández accused the PP administrations led by Marga Prohens at the Govern and Llorenç Galmés at the Consell of failing to provide enough answers after three years in office.

The PSOE candidate cited this summer’s protests, including 10,000 people mobilised to defend es Trenc and 70,000 against Mallorca’s overcrowding. She said the PP’s model was unsustainable.

Manifesto process gets under way

The Socialist Federation of Mallorca, known as the FSM, will approve an Island and Municipal Political Conference as the first step in drawing up its 2027 manifesto. The party says the process will be open to civil society and the wider public, with contributions sought from every town and neighbourhood.

Fernández said housing, overcrowding and mobility would be the main challenges addressed in the coming months. She also set out priorities including public transport, support for older people and protecting land from speculation.

The meeting brought together representatives from PSOE groups across Mallorca and was attended by Rosario Sánchez, the PSIB candidate for president of the Govern.

At the start of the session, those present remembered Joan Gaspar Vallori, Tomeu Barceló, Joana Maria Socias and Celestí Alomar. More than 300 people had attended a tribute to Vallori in Alcúdia on Friday. He died in April aged 41 after serving as Mallorca’s island director of tourism and as a PSIB councillor in Alcúdia.
