Mallorca food bills: call to pass on public aid

On Mallorca and across the Balearic Islands, families still face high food bills: consumer group Consubal wants the benefits of millions in public aid to reach shoppers. On 24 October, the Balearic Islands Consumer and Users Association (Consubal) called on the Balearic government and island councils to make sure that happens. The aid goes to producers, distributors and other businesses to offset rising energy and transport costs.

Consubal says it is “unacceptable” for taxpayers to fund that support while families continue to pay high prices for their shopping. It says there are not enough checks to show whether the money is helping to hold down prices.

The group wants officials to track and publish the impact of the aid, with particular attention to basic foods. It also wants them to consider tying grants to verifiable promises that consumers will benefit through lower prices.
