Menorca public homes: 250 flats for island residents
More than 250 public flats could soon move into construction on Menorca, with new developments reserved for people who live on the island. Balearic Government president Marga Prohens made the pledge on Wednesday at a meeting of the People’s Party, or PP, on Menorca. She said the homes should meet the needs of people who have spent years living and working on the island.
The rule is based on the housing law passed during the current term, according to the PP. Applicants for protected public housing must have lived on Menorca for at least five years, although town halls can set a longer requirement.
Some towns set a 10-year rule
The PP in Menorca put forward motions in every town hall in 2025 calling for priority to go to applicants registered in the municipality for at least 10 years.
That approach has already been used in Sant Lluís, Menorca, where 11 recently handed-over public homes went to people who could show 10 years of residence in the town. Planned developments in Ferreries will use the same threshold.
Homes due to be handed over in Fornells will require 15 years of residence, the PP said.
More projects waiting to start
The PP said work on more than 250 further public homes on Menorca could begin soon. They are included in new schemes by the Balearic Housing Institute, known as Ibavi.
Prohens also used the meeting, attended by PP Menorca president Cristóbal Marqués and secretary general Ramón Sintes, to review work during the current term and the projects still ahead.
