Puente resigned on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Fernández, secretary-general of the Socialist Federation of Mallorca, said he had taken responsibility and shown respect for the victims’ families. She called his resignation unusually well explained and consistent.

Before leaving office, Puente worked from the command post managing the response to last Wednesday’s crash and approved aid for the families of those who died, Fernández said.

She rejected the suggestion that the 29 November elections drove his decision. Asked why he had not resigned sooner, she said he did not want to leave at a critical moment before finishing his public duties.
