Mallorca pupils call for shade in Palma's Pere Garau
In Mallorca’s Pere Garau neighbourhood in Palma, schoolchildren are calling for more shade and cooler places. They took part in a climate event on 7 November 2026 to explore how the neighbourhood could better cope with heat. The first Pere Garau Climate Laboratory was organised by the Pere Garau Saludable initiative.
The children joined activities about how trees, plants, shade and better public spaces can reduce heat and improve health and wellbeing. Organisers want them to look around the neighbourhood, spot what it needs and suggest how they would like it to change.
The call for more greenery focuses on places used daily by children, older people and others more vulnerable to high temperatures. Organisers also presented a proposal for “climate refuges”: nearby spaces intended to offer more comfortable conditions during hot spells. They hope to create a network of cooler, accessible places using trees, plants, shade and other measures.
Vehicle-sharing co-operative Ecotxe also presented its scheme at the event. It has more than 300 members and offers shared use of cars as an alternative to individual ownership.
