Balearic inspectors review Spain’s 898 radiation checks

898 radiation inspections across Spain in 2025: Balearic inspectors review the results at a meeting in Vitoria-Gasteiz, in Spain’s Basque Country. The Spanish Nuclear Safety Council says the facilities inspected operated safely and met the rules. Inspectors from nine autonomous communities attended the annual meeting.

The checks covered radioactive facilities and medical X-ray sites. Spain has 44,185 facilities that use ionising radiation, more than 97 per cent of them for medical X-ray diagnosis.

In a separate session, inspectors from the Balearic Islands, Catalonia and the Basque Country discussed applications to authorise radioactive facilities. They also covered new radioactive medicines for clinical trials and licensing work for planned proton therapy facilities in the public health system. The council says the wider project would bring ten facilities to seven autonomous communities and expand public cancer treatment. It has not said whether any are planned for the Balearic Islands.
