Mallorca cloudy as Spain faces orange rain alerts

Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, stays under thick cloud on Tuesday, 29 September, while five regions of Spain face alerts for rain, storms, wind and rough seas. Spain’s state weather agency, the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet), forecasts orange alerts for rain and storms in Barcelona and Girona, for rain in Castellón, and for rain and rough seas in A Coruña. Further alerts cover Lleida, Tarragona, Pontevedra, Lugo, Ourense, Asturias and Cantabria.

Cold air high above north-eastern Spain could bring strong or very strong storms in the first half of the day, especially on and near the Catalan coast. Downpours could be torrential in places. Isolated hailstones could measure more than two centimetres, while a waterspout or small tornado could form near the coast.

On Mallorca, Aemet forecasts very cloudy skies, moderate easterly winds and little change in temperatures. Its forecast does not list an alert for the island.

Later in the day, an Atlantic front approaches mainland Spain from the west. It could bring persistent, locally heavy rain to Galicia and the western slopes of the northern mountain ranges.
