Mallorca rain tops 40 l/m2 as heavy downpours hit

More than 40 l/m2 of rain fell on Mallorca between 9 and 15 September, before intense rainfall was recorded on the 16th. Palma/Son Sant Joan measured 36 l/m2, while Palma de Mallorca/CMT recorded 24 l/m2. Spain’s state weather agency, Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (Aemet), reported the figures.

Mallorca was among the places with the highest totals during the period. Girona recorded more than 80 l/m2, while the Alicante coast also received more than 40 l/m2.

Since the start of the hydrological year in early October, Spain has received 643 l/m2 of rain, Aemet said. That is 6% above the usual 614 l/m2 for this point in the year.

Aemet lists Ibiza as the Balearic island area with rainfall above normal. In the Canary Islands, the surplus is far greater: extensive areas have received more than twice their usual climatological rainfall.

On the 16th, intense rain was also recorded in Catalonia and inland areas of the Valencian Community. Totals exceeded 80 l/m2 and locally approached 100 l/m2, especially in parts of Catalonia and inland Valencia.
