Mallorca rain threat: 100 l/m2 could fall Wednesday

Mallorca could be hit by more than 100 l/m2 of rain in just two to three hours on Wednesday, 16 September. The Spanish State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, says very heavy showers and thunderstorms may also bring large hail and very strong wind gusts. It warns that flooding or flash floods could follow.

A front moving through with cold air higher up in the atmosphere is driving the unstable weather. AEMET spokesman Rubén del Campo said the danger was significant in the areas at risk, including Mallorca.

Storm risk runs into Thursday

The unsettled spell is expected to continue across the Balearics overnight into Thursday. AEMET says some parts of the islands could receive more than 50 l/m2 in under an hour, especially Ibiza.

Weather service Eltiempo.es puts Mallorca, Ibiza and Formentera at risk of more than 40 to 50 l/m2 in an hour during Thursday morning. It forecasts up to 30 l/m2 for Menorca. For southern Mallorca, it says Wednesday's storms could bring 80 to 100 l/m2 over two to three hours.

Calmer weather from Friday

Showers and thunderstorms may still return locally to the Mediterranean area and the Balearics on Friday, with some potentially heavy. But AEMET expects more settled conditions, less rain and rising temperatures to take hold from then.

By Saturday, showers should be largely limited to the south-east coast of mainland Spain and Ibiza. AEMET expects no showers there on Sunday.
