Mallorca rape trial: man admits checking her genitals
Manacor, Mallorca: a man accused of raping his partner admits looking at her genitals to see whether she had had sex with other men, but denies the assault at a trial on Thursday, 1 October. The Provincial Court of the Balearic Islands hears the case in Palma, Mallorca. The allegations concern an argument and an alleged attack at their home on 13 and 14 May 2018.
Woman questions what she reported
The woman says she remembers almost nothing of the events. Asked whether the man tried to rape her and beat her in the back yard, she replies: “Did I report that?”
She does recall him accusing her of having sex with other men after she went out with a friend. She says he touched her genitals. The man denies sexually assaulting or beating her, including in front of their children, but acknowledges that they argued.
Witness describes beating
A witness says she saw the man beat the woman. A Civil Guard officer who went to the home says the children were very frightened. One child said their father should stop hitting their mother, according to the officer. The man disputes that account, saying the child told their mother to stop hitting him.
After hearing the evidence, the prosecutor cuts the requested prison term from 12 years for rape and one year for causing injuries to one year and 11 months for sexual assault without penetration, plus five months for causing injuries. The prosecutor takes into account €10,000 the man has already paid the woman in compensation and the fact that the case was stalled for several years. The defence still seeks an acquittal.
