Balearics: Red Cross helps 12,574 older people and carers

Across the Balearic Islands, the Red Cross says it helped 12,574 older people and carers in 2025, with work aimed at preventing abuse, isolation and digital exclusion. The charity released the figure on Tuesday, 29 September, ahead of the International Day of Older Persons on 1 October. Across Spain, it says it reached 231,014 people.

The Red Cross is calling for stronger protection of older people’s rights. It wants people to be able to decide where they live and what happens next in their lives, take part in society and get the support they need to live independently. It also points to dignity and freedom from discrimination because of age.

Marta Mateu, a Red Cross psychologist, said a person’s rights should never depend on their age. The call comes as the United Nations begins work on a future legally binding agreement on older people’s rights.
