Spain’s €83,252 million debt plan moves ahead
Madrid, Spain: a plan for the state to take on €83,252 million of regional debt moves forward on Tuesday, 29 September. The bureau of Spain’s Congress ends repeated extensions to the deadline for changes to the bill, parliamentary sources told Europa Press. Parties must submit their proposed changes on Wednesday.
The government says taking on the debt would improve the regions’ finances, help them borrow on better terms and save around €6,700 million in interest. It argues that the move would also address financial problems the regions have carried for more than a decade.
Ministers sent the bill to Congress in December 2025. After six months without progress, lawmakers debated it for the first time in July and rejected attempts by the People’s Party and Vox to throw it out altogether. Wednesday’s deadline is another step, but the debt relief is not yet law.
