Madrid: Spain's regional funding plan heads to cabinet

Spain's regional funding model is due to reach the Council of Ministers within the next few weeks, Minister Félix Bolaños said in Madrid on Tuesday, 8 September. The reform covers the financing system for Spain's autonomous communities. Catalan party ERC says the model is indispensable for Catalonia and wants the government to move faster.

Bolaños made the pledge during a Senate scrutiny session. It follows Friday's approval of the proposal by the Fiscal and Financial Policy Council, known by its Spanish initials CPFF. Regions governed by the PP rejected the reform.

An ERC senator criticised the lack of a date for cabinet approval and pressed the government to deliver on commitments made to the party. Bolaños said the government was working to honour agreements with different political forces and pointed to the funding model as an example of further deals it hopes to reach during the rest of the parliamentary term.

The minister also defended the government's record in Catalonia. He cited pardons and the Amnesty Law, saying they had helped bring about a normalisation of the situation in Spain, particularly in Catalonia, which he described as vital for the autonomous community's growth and for improving citizens' quality of life.

Bolaños said the government had invested more in Catalonia than any other since Spain's return to democracy.
