Mallorca rent cap call meets push to build homes

Mallorca’s housing squeeze: MÉS per Mallorca calls for rent caps across the Balearic Islands in Palma, Mallorca, on Monday, 28 September. MÉS spokesperson Lluís Apesteguia wants the islands declared a zona tensionada — a housing pressure zone — to allow rents to be capped. He points to an 87-year-old woman evicted from her Madrid home last week and urges the regional government to use every housing measure within its powers to help people stay in their homes.

Vox spokesperson Manuela Cañadas also plans to question the government about what she calls signs that house prices are falling. She wants measures to ensure any drop benefits households.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez says his government will approve a decree on Tuesday. Cañadas says it comes too late and will not help citizens. People’s Party spokesperson Sebastià Sagreras says a decree alone will not solve the housing problem.
