Mallorca rent rises: PSIB pushes council-led caps

Mallorca’s rent rises face a fresh bid for limits: the PSIB wants councils to decide whether their areas qualify for rent caps. The Balearic Parliament is due to debate the proposal on Tuesday, the party said on Wednesday in Palma, Mallorca.

The PSIB wants to change the Balearic housing law so each council can declare its municipality an area where the housing market is under strain. That declaration would open the way to limits on rent increases. Each council would choose whether to make it.

Iago Negueruela, the PSIB’s parliamentary spokesman, says many evictions follow rent increases. He wants the Balearic government to let councils make the decision, pointing to Palma and Inca, also on Mallorca. He has urged regional president Marga Prohens to say whether she will allow rent caps. The proposal goes before Parliament on Tuesday.
