Mallorca rent caps: PSIB says government blocks councils
Mallorca’s councils cannot set rent caps themselves: on 8 October, the Balearic Socialist Party (PSIB) accuses the Balearic government of refusing to let them. Socialist MP Teresa Suárez says the housing crisis across the Balearic Islands now reaches people with jobs. Workers whose rental contracts end in a few months or a year may not know where to go, she says, because their wages will not cover higher rents.
Suárez says a Spanish housing law in place since 2023 allows rent limits in areas officially designated as having a strained housing market. But the Balearic government holds the power to use that measure and has chosen not to, she argues. The PSIB wants councils to be able to designate those areas and apply the limits themselves. The People’s Party (PP) voted against its proposal in the Balearic Parliament on Tuesday.
Suárez also calls for more public housing in the medium and long term. For people who need somewhere to sleep tomorrow, she says, emergency housing measures are more urgent. She points to decrees rejected in Spain’s Congress of Deputies with votes from the PP, Vox and Junts.
